Mootral, developed in Wales is a revolutionary product that helps reduce carbon emissions emanating from ruminants such as cows (i.e. methane from flatulence and belching). Based on a garlic extract, the product is a feed additive that can be added to the animal's daily feed or water. Initial tests have shown a 20% reduction in methane emissions from the animals.

Monty Kerley from the University of Missouri (UM) in the US is studying how cows might be able to gain more weight while consuming less, potentially saving farmers up to 40 percent of feed costs.

Mootral chosen as one of Green Challenge finalist!

Mootral Ltd, a UK startup developing carbon reduction technologies for the livestock industry, has just been shortlisted by the Dutch Lottery as one of 6 finalists in their annual Green Challenge competition
The final will take place in Amsterdam on September 24th during PICNIC’09. It will be judged by Niklas Zennstrom, (Founder of Kazaa, Skype and Joost), Jim Walker, COO, Climate Group, and Liesbeth van Tongeren, Head of Greenpeace Holland. The winner of this Green Challenge competition (sponsored by the Dutch Lottery) will get to share the €700,000. If Mootral wins, all monies will be used to finish the development of Mootral and launch.

Tesco becomes UK's first retailer to display carbon footprint on milk

Mootral - Supermarket giant Tesco has become the first UK retailer to display the full carbon footprint of milk — one of the top-selling products in its stores. From today, all Tesco own-label full-fat, semi-skimmed and skimmed milk ranges will display the carbon footprint label as part of an on-going drive to help shoppers make "green" purchasing decisions. It has pledged to "footprint" 500 products by the end of the year. The new labelling will not apply to organic milk, where greenhouse gas emissions are generally much lower than for conventional milk. via The Guardian>>

Mootral has just been chosen as a finalist to the BBC World Challenge. Mootral is one of 12 solutions chosen worldwide, to address a global problem in a sustainable way. As part of this final, the BBC will broadcast a 15mins programme about Mootral in late September. "We are delighted to have been chosen by the BBC. This is a testament to the credibility and efficacy of Mootral. We look forward to the final in late September!" says Michael Mathres, co-Founder of Mootral.
